Words of Wisdom

Words of Wisdom

OK, here's a great commentary on gurus and wisdom: in the Monkees movie "Head" there's a scene where Peter Tork, Mr. Hippie Guy, sits the other three down and starts to expound on the nature of the universe, the mysteries of life, etc. etc. It's all very serious and he ends on the cosmic riddle: "But why listen to me? For I know nothing."

Davy Jones, who has been sitting there patiently, gets royally pissed off at this and demands to know why he's been sitting there listening to all this blather if Peter indeed knows nothing. At which point he kicks down the door to the room they're in and starts kicking the crap out of people.

Well, I thought it was funny. See the movie, it's got some fun scenes and good music.

Well, you knew I was going to love this, since it falls more toward the Dr. Demento side of things. Didn't you? So, for the record, I love this.

And remember:

"Nobody ever lends money to a man with a sense of humor."
- Peter Tork

(See what I did there?)

Well, you're a good chunk of my target audience (actually, a good chunk of the audience in general), so I pander whenever possible. Of course, it helps that my sensibilities run that way anyway...

Ah, Head, it's on my list of all-time favorite films along with the following (in alphabetical order):

Animal House, Bang the Drum Slowly, Citizen Kane, Duck Soup, A Face in the Crowd, Ghost World, The King of Comedy, The Last of Sheila, Lost in America, Manhattan, Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Nashville, Quiz Show, Raising Arizona, Record City, Singin' in the Rain, Sirens, Skidoo, This Is Spinal Tap, Topsy-Turvy, Young Frankenstein

Incidentally, I visited my parents in upstate NY over the Memorial Day weekend and one afternoon we motored up to SU. The campus is under construction ... they're still working on Newhouse III. I stopped in at Schine and picked up a Newhouse T-shirt.
